Interview With NYT Bestselling Author Jen Lancaster
53
<Commence background “Jock Jams” /Monster Truck rally/pro wrestling music for this intro:>
Dude, she’s the queen of all humor memoir. The 80s-era writing champion. New York Times bestselling author– rocking the pop-collar izods and pearls. Her hot new book “My Fair Lazy” comes out in May…Ladies and gentlemen… please put your hands together and give a huge Pajamas and Coffee welcome to….
JEN LANCASTER! <the crowd goes wild>
I met Jen at her book signing in DC for Pretty in Plaid: A Life, a Witch, and a Wardrobe, or, the Wonder Years Before the Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart-Ass Phase last year.
And before you point out how douchetastic it was for me to wear izod-pearls to try to be just like her, let me point out that she asked readers to dress in 80s for the book signing. When I arrived (I always keep my sunglasses on top of my head- I have been known to actually put ON a pair of sunglasses while another pair is on my head) and she was wearing like matching stuff, of course I swooned.
I was first in line of the 300 people at the signing (we were assigned numbers, and my sister in law and I were there first to pick up our numbers then go drink cosmos at the bar across the street). When I came up to her, all trembly and grinny and holding my book (which had come out two days before and I had already finished, you know, in case there was a quiz…) she said:
“You look cute!” And then, like Rudolph when the little Clarice reindeer says he’s cute, I of course pranced all over Barnes and Noble squealing “I’m cute! I’m cuuuuuute!”
Enough about me.
Jen was kind enough to agree to let me interview her for Suite 101- so the formal interview is over here. Go check it out! She gives a ton of amazing advice for writers and bloggers alike.
And here are the more casual EXCLUSIVE Pajamas and Coffee interview questions (squeal!):
marymac: You are a New York Times bestselling author. Do you think there’s too much media coverage about your writing and not enough about the fact that you invented the Quadstuff Oreo, possibly one of the greatest culinary achievements of all time?
Jen Lancaster:
Let’s be clear here – I don’t think there’s too much media coverage about my writing. I welcome more coverage. Lots more. So much more. Also, I’m probably more proud of the Twink-wich, which is a sandwich derived from a Twinkie stuffed into a halved Ding-Dong. (Don’t judge.)
marymac (after trip to store to create magical Twink-wich): I was born in New Jersey and grew up listening to “Fridays With Frank” and “Saturdays (and Sundays!) With Sinatra” on our kitchen radio. I know you’re a huge fan, too. Have you heard about the new Frank Sinatra musical Come Fly With Me? How exciting is that?!
Jen Lancaster:
I was unaware. I like the sounds of this, but to really be fantastic, I would like them to bring back the real Frank – not the octogenarian who sang those weird duets with Bono, but the skinny-tied, Jack Daniels-swilling Frank from the Rat Pack heyday. Thanks in advance for finding a way to make this happen.
marymac: (after brief daydream of totally going to Broadway to see Frank Sinatra musical with Jen Lancaster because we are going to be BFFs now) If you HAD to sing one Karaoke song (like to survive, or something), what would it be and why?
Jen Lancaster:
It’s funny you should mention singing. Last night while watching a bunch of wooden little girls trying (FAILING) to emote on Idol, I told my husband that I’d be a great singer if I could sing. What I mean is I think I’d bring real passion to the stage and I feel like the audience would connect with me. If I could carry a tune, that is.
I’d say my go-to songs in the car (ergo Karaoke) are either Ladylike by Storm Large and the Balls because it’s the ultimate grrrrl-power anthem and Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield because, seriously, how often does someone write a song about your job?
marymac: Speaking of music.. which big hair 80s band lead singer would you totally make out with, considering the fact that Joe Elliott from Def Leppard is already mine?
Jen Lancaster:
Technically this isn’t an option because he wasn’t in a hair band and also, he’s not on my team, but since it’s all hypothetical anyway, I’d choose George Michael circa 1984.

Wow. Just wow that she let me interview her because she’s a huge inspiration and my idol and I am just so blessed and thankful and obnoxiously gushy and I will just shut up now. She rocks. That is all.
I can’t wait until Amazon sends my pre-ordered copy of her new book: My Fair Lazy: One Reality Television Addict’s Attempt to Discover If Not Being A Dumb Ass Is the New Black, or, a Culture-Up Manifesto
which I will of course devour and bring to Jen in May (the day before my birthday- what a treat!) at her DC book signing.
Jen rocks, yo. (Check out her blog at jennsylvania.com).
If you haven’t read all of Jen’s books yet, catch up- here’s a list of all five:

Would it be excessive to add Nutella to a twink-witch?

right after we deep fry it, right? Hellz no.
OK–I love Jen…but do you guys remember Chocodiles? They were chocolate dipped twinkies…it was a fudgier chocolate than dingdongs had on them…really tasty…You are soooo lucky to have met Jen…she doesn’t come to Omaha…but she & I would totally be bff’s too as long as we didn’t discuss politics…LOL. beth
That is so freaking awesome! How very cool of her to let you interview her?! I may be a wee bit jealous…. Congrats anyway though!

Tanya if you liked Bitter…you will FREAK OUT reading SUCH A PRETTY FAT!!! It had me laughing hysterically…& when I read out loud to my husband (which of course I had to do)…he laughed out loud as well! beth
I just loooooove that you got to interview her! My fave book was Such a Pretty Fat, but let’s be real here, they’re all great! I’m looking forward to making it to her Dc book signing so that I can be all nervous, then get my book signed, then try not to barf on her shoes, then try to act cool (which doesn’t usually go that well for me), then think for half a second that she remembers anyone from those darn things (unless of course, I actually DO barf on her shoes, in which case, I’m pretty certain she’d remember meeting me;). Yay Mary – you just upped you awesome quotient!
Christine VB´s last blog ..Smoothie-Palooza!
Twink-wich raised in the air “Huzah for smart girls who read, eat and stalk amazingly talented writers”. Spurred by this post I’ve reserved my copy of her new book too!

I have to go shopping now. Sudden odd craving.
TWINKWITCH? OMG!!!! I am so hungry now, I’m ready to gnaw off my own arm!!!!!!!!
Fun interview–great questions, you fame ho!!
I love it! You’re both hysterical!
I LOVE IT! What a great “meeting of the minds”!
And yet again as the nutrition consultant left out of all the fun conversations, who the hell wants to put the fun in brocolli…
Love the post love you…no not weird ass stalker, just think you are awesome and admire you and love your writing…still not stalker….
Lizzy´s last blog ..Honey I’m home! Why are you naked?
Okay, I havent read any of her stuff but now I have to, because she is effing funny, and you love her.
The Twink-wich sounds kinda gross actually, not sure if gross in a good way. Technically speaking I may have invented the Quad-Stuff Oreo when I was about six and crammed four oreos into my mouth and kept talking. Just saying…
Yes I am Kindling Bitter is the New Black tonight!
Brahm´s last blog ..Gotta love Rita Rudner, part three
Brahm, since you are an admitted JL newbie, I will enlighten you. A QuadStuff Oreo is when you take of one end each of two Double Stuf Oreos then put the two filling sides together. I think my nipples just got a tiny bit hard describing it.
Good idea to start with “Bitter” and read in order.
I am gonna brag here and talk about partying with her and Fletch at BlogHer last summer! At the penthouse pool of another bloggy friend, HIIIIIGHHHH above Chi-Town. Totally sweet. And I will see her again in May for the Detroit-area signing. Can’t wait for the new book.

NICE!
that was AWESOME! You are sooo Chris Farley ala his SNL actor interview skit! I love it, and I LOVE her – she is one of my fav authors! So of course this means I actually HATE you because I am incredibly jealous that you not only got to meet her but a kick ass super funny interview? Yeah, your life sucks. ha.
GREAT job! I loved reading this and, um, can I tag along with you guys to the Broadway show?
“remember that time you wrote that book? that was AWESOME!”
While you are outside her house, make sure you find out what she is wearing to the next book signing so that you can match!
Now ordering all 5 books from Amazon.
I NEED A TWINK-WICH PRONTO!!! Oh and like a huge oversized latte – Caramel – or Cinnamon. Screw it, both.
Great interview!!! I am also secretly jealous and now going to flash you glares until I realise that Jen was totally right…
you are so super cute. *sigh*

now stop glaring at me.
Twinkwiches all around!
great interview!
I wear my sunglasses on my head all the time too, which makes for a strange hairdo when I take them off again!

The interview is awesome! Her answers were so funny and witty I can’t wait to read her books, and your questions were perfect. Great job!

Squee! Great interview. I’m so jealous. George Michael 1984 would be my pick too….those buns!
Now, I’m off to preorder that book.
Wow, that’s so cool you got to interview her. I really enjoy her books, and I know that must sound strange coming from a young black guy.
That’s why I love KIndle, because know one on the train knows what the hell your reading.
Oh Jen Lancaster, I love you so! And Ms. MaryMac, love the matchy-matchy at the book signing! Y’all are adorable!

Have I gone through a time warp? Or is it just this crazy website? For the date of the blog says 11/3/2010, and scrolling down and reading other comments has warped time again, so now it’s 12/03/2010. Just sayin’…
P.S.: I love everything Jen Lancaster writes; I can’t wait for her new book to come out (I know I can pre-order but as I’m watching every dollar because I’m unemployed, I’m gonna have to wait…)
Kim, it’s the DD/MM/YYYY format.
ANDDDD marymac has no idea how to fix it- waiting for Blog Expert People….

Great interview! You are both super cute! Can’t wait for My Fair Lazy. I’m thrilled to see all of the people that posted that you “introduced” to Jen’s work; they are in for a treat!!!
pearls and izod are not in style anymore? WTF??????
Pammy Pam´s last blog ..retail therapy: SCORE!!!!
Oh yeah, your style is a great fit for an interview with JL – loved it. I started with Pretty in Plaid because it was available as audio from the library. I’m glad that I did because I like chronological order when possible or else I get confused. I’m not so glad that I tried to listen in the car while ferrying the kids around – I’m sure they’ll recover.

Anyway, she did give some great advice for writing…which I think I just want to do because I’m lazy & want to sit in front of my computer all day & play Treasure Madness on facebook. Anyway, your blog is awesome!!! Thanks for making me laugh!

What a great interview–I mean, your questions! Jen is such a riot, and you totally enable her. The two of you together are hilarious.
Now I have a huge craving for a quad-stuffed Oreo dunked in a latte. That’s my contribution to culinary excellence: the Quadoreoccino.
(Shout out to Middle Aged Woman and our BlogHer partying!)

I met Jen Lancaster last May at B&N in NYC. I behaved much the same way you did! Not only did she point out she has the same Target madras plaid skirt that I had on! She told me she liked my shoes-that they were cute! Believe me, I had facebook’d, twittered, and texted everyone I know to share this info by the time I had made it out of the store! For the rest of the night, anytime my friends even so much as glanced in my general direction, I sang out “she liked my shoes!”
Do you think that this cms is good for my first site ?
I see you are experinced blogger, what is the best method to monetize my first blog ?
Awesome interview. Awesome author. Questionable choice on who she would sleep with, but hey, it’s fantasy!
BTW, Brett, way up there above me^ scores big poins for being super cute young black guy with great taste in books!!!
